THISIS720 Mafia Month

MAFIA MONTH

With the recent launch of the monster gaming title Mafia II the smell of Bolognese is in the air. Just like the delicious pasta dish mafia movies and games are much loved and a favourite by all. From the portrayal of ethics, morals and the importance of family to the pride, swagger, and display of where the line stands, the classics leave you satisfied like a 3 course meal. Once consumed, they’re a man’s guide to life. Mafia Month is a tribute to the best films in the genre by the locals of the "Underbelly" city.

BLOW. -

“This is grade A 100% pure Colombian cocaine ladies and gentlemen….Disco shit.” This quote from the film is used in the popular techno song “Pure Disco Shit” by DJ Zany. The song goes hard, just like the life of George Jung aka “Boston George” the real life drug lord whom which the film Blow is based.  A long blonde, beach hair having, Johnny Depp is the star of the film playing Boston George. Along side Johnny is his phenomenal but destructive wife played by Penélope Cruz (who herself, is enough of a reason to watch the film).

The story is based around George’s campaign to live in wealth, GET SOME and to never become like his father who was a strong family man that worked hard to keep his loved ones happy. George vowing not to become his father takes a vastly different path. Through his spectacular drug smuggling, gun shooting life lessons he learns the importance of family and forgiveness. This film is not your regular dark, sinister New Jersey/ New York Mafia, drug lord film. It’s shot from the sunny beaches of Cali to the homely villages of Mexico and has a lively feel about it.

An enjoyable tale of a man, who’s story is well told. After researching who George Jung was and understanding his real life influence and dominance in the drug world I had a much greater appreciation for the film. (Attached below is background information on Boston George.) This film receives 3.5 mob hits out of 5, it’s a great film and story but it could be taken to the next level.

George Jacob Jung (born August 6, 1942), nicknamed "Boston George", was a major player in the cocaine trade in the United States in the 1970s and early 1980s. Jung was a part of the Medellín Cartel which was responsible for up to 85 percent of the cocaine smuggled into the United States. He specialized in the smuggling of cocaine from Colombia on a large scale.
