THISIS720 Mafia Month
With the recent launch of the monster gaming title Mafia II the smell of Bolognese is in the air. Just like the delicious pasta dish mafia movies and games are much loved and a favourite by all. From the portrayal of ethics, morals and the importance of family to the pride, swagger, and display of where the line stands, the classics leave you satisfied like a 3 course meal. Once consumed, they’re a man’s guide to life. Mafia Month is a tribute to the best films in the genre by the locals of the "Underbelly" city.
CITY OF GOD
With a gun in you’re hand the sky’s the limit, the mindset of innocent but corrupt, young minds who have grown up in the gang culture of the ‘City Of God.’ Childhood friends, some may call them “hoods” create a brotherhood of comradely, respect and power. With the power gained, any ambition and initiative shown is overshadowed by the next crew wanting to take over the business. A cycle cleverly captured by the movies tag line “Fight and you'll never survive... Run and you'll never escape.”
A powerful film shot well and in Portuguese is not lost in translation. In fact being foreign further immerses you in the distant culture. The story is told be an amiable street savvy photographer who understands the culture but can see beyond it.
Despite the sinister killings and activities the hoods are involved in you can relate to the characters. There is the lighter side of the film, as they talk about their ambitions and buy new clothes to look cool amongst their friends as we all do. There is an innocents you can not hate. Just like these guys, we all want to be able to do things our way, get some and have a loyalty that comes with being in a gang.
